tula yoga

hi, i'm rachel and this video is going to show how to do hip kangaroo carry with a woven wrap. i usually do this carry with a size 3 wrap, but the wrap i'm using today is a size 2. this wrap is by robbin's nest weaving. what i do first is find the middle of the wrap. if you're working with a size 3 or 4 (a wrap that you have plenty of length with), you can do this carry centered. since i'm cutting it close on length by using one size smaller than i usually do, i'm going to go just a few inches off center. i'm going to start there. this carry takes a bit of work to tighten and it's easiest if you start baby in a burp position. i bring the top edge to the nape of her neck and bring the rest of the width between us to make a seat. i position her knees above her bottom.

this is ellie. she's 2 months old, so she's still little for a hip carry. i'm going to show how to do this as a front carry. the next thing i do is take my longer tail and hold it out over my arm. i take the bottom edge of the wrap in my hand and flip it up over my shoulder. the top edge of the wrap is now at the outside of my shoulder and the bottom edge is near my neck. on the opposite side, i'm going to bring all of this wrap behind me and around my back in a straight line. now i have one tail nice and held tightly in front.

she's seated in her usual newborn position with knees higher than bottom. i'm bringing her centered on my body and down slightly (no longer holding her in burp position) then i bring the other tail around behind me and begin to tighten. i tighten the bottom edge first (which is on the top behind me) then i tighten the top edge (which is on the bottom in the back) i adjust the shoulder and bring any top edge slack to the edge of my shoulder. since the slack in the carry is mostly in the top and middle of the wrap, i'm going to tighten the top and the middle. to do that, i pull the bottom and middle of the tail behind me. the secret to tightening is to shrug the slack back with my shoulder and then pull it through with my hand.

then i do a quick check of her position and make sure she is comfortable. then i tie a double knot under her bottom. you can take the wrap over both of baby's legs and tie a double knot. or, you can take one tail under one leg and one tail over. with a newborn and a thick wrap, i like to take one tail under her knee. i find that hold the knot well, but it also works well to take both tails over her legs and tie off under her bottom. there you have hip kangaroo with a woven wrap! it's a cuddly carry and great for summertime. thanks for watching!
