beer yoga

(chris willcock) so the project started with our goal to expand the capacity of our brewing operations. we were able to make certain amount of beer, and to our joy, the customers kept coming back and wanted more than we could actually make. (jaron mitchell) 4 pines is a small brewing company based on the northern beaches of sydney, originally starting in manly as a small brew pub. the business actually started from me and my old man having a surf, and post surf

he just looked over and posed the question, “ok, where do we go to get a decent beer?” (chris fox) from an energy perspective, the biggest impact would have been the optimisation of wort cooling. it delivered gas savings of approximately half of the total 28 percent gas savings the rest being a mixture of improved efficiency from higher production output with the fixed losses staying the same and also the heat recovery from the cogen unit, the yanmar chiller. (chris willcock) the oeh in the end offered $38,000

to help complete the project, which was a big factor in the decision making in us going ahead with the engineering. (chris fox): one of my mentors as an engineer when i was younger told me that without measurement you can’t have control and so measurement is absolutely essential for any continuous improvement because if you can’t measure it, you can’t control it. by installing the steam meter on the main steam supply will obviously enable us to validate the work we’ve done. we as engineers need to learn when we’ve got things wrong too.

and in this case, validation was great in fact it proved better than we were expecting. then 4 pines also had the ongoing benefit of now knowing how much steam they use. so what that means is that when you’re drinking a bottle of 4 pines, that bottle of 4 pines took 30 percent less gas to produce. (jaron) i guess where we are at the moment is we want to get ourselves to a position where we do feel very comfortable about way that we go about business not just from a production and manufacturing point of view but also

how we handle ourselves in the community. it’s more to take a position of leadership, but also it’s really the right thing to do in being a sustainable business.
