i’m here in the new robert r. jorgensenathletic and events center. on june 18th, 2010, webroke ground here on our utica campus, and sixteen months later, we’re ready todebut this beautiful state-of-the-art facility and pay tribute to the coach who madesuch a big difference in the lives of so many athletes. bob jorgensen is well-known at mvcc forhis dedication to the hawks’ teams and to individual athletes. he left a positivemark on thousands of alumni over his thirty-one years at mvcc.


the robert r. jorgensen athleticand events center is a testament to the success of mvcc’s hawks, and a tributeto a very special man. well, 1960 was a pretty special year formohawk valley community college. that's the year when bob jorgensen arrived onthis campus. when he got here, we have five sports -intercollegiate athletics - and from there he set out to build one of the mostextensive, diverse, and successful two-year college intercollegiate athleticprograms in the entire country. and to this day, we represent over twenty-twosports at mvcc. he truly is the founding father of hawk


athletics. without his visionary leadership, we'd be amere share of what we are today. the thousands of students that came before,and the thousands that will come after, will be eternally grateful for the presencehe's had on this campus for that period of time. built around the existing twenty-onethousand, seven hundred square-foot gymnasium building, the jorgensen centeradds a forty thousand square-foot practice facility and a six thousandsquare-foot state-of-the-art fitness center. the fieldhouse features tennis, basketball,and volleyball courts,


plus practice space for lacrosse andsoccer, and a competitive surface for indoortrack, complete with a pole vault and long and triple jump pit. this facility will seat up to twenty-sevenhundred people for special events. the fitness center features a fullcircuit of body control machines, ellipticals, treadmills, and exercisebikes for a cardio workout. some cardio machines even have their ownflat-screen tvs and there are larger tvs all around the center. the free-weight area features plateloaded free weight machines


and a line of dumbbells ranging fromfive pounds to one hundred pounds. other center features include amotorized rock-climbing wall, an xbox kinect, and a video game training system. the hall of champions is a showcase forall of mvcc’s championship sports and stellar athletes, featuring cases of awards won throughoutthe years by the hawks. improvements to the existing gymbuilding include renovations to the swimming pool and locker room area,renovated classrooms, the addition of a state


of the art athletic training room, astudent success center, and a beautiful yoga and aerobics studio. so there you have a look at the newestaddition to our utica campus, and a little bit of history about the man who symbolizes excellencein hawk athletics. thanks for watching.
